I hated Ghost...until...
I was tricked into listening to Ghost! A few Vitamin R's and a foot tap later, I asked who was being summoned through the speakers.
Honestly, I was a Ghost hater. “Booooo, they’re a group of posers!” and “You look like death, but sound like sunshine.” It was too confusing and it’s been square-hammered into my head since I first heard of Ghost in an issue of Revolver Magazine (remember magazines?).
The album released at the time was Prequelle, and I was in shock and awe at the cover art and stage presence! I thought maybe this would be my entry into black metal or something heavy and nasty. After all, there was so much hubbub about this band.
And what’s one of the most popular songs off that album?? “Rats.” (Awwaaaoooooww!) My first audio introduction to Ghost was listening to “Rats” while some dude with a Misfits-looking mask was on my screen doing ballet in a second-hand set for “Thriller!”
I was laughing so hard! So yea….They were a hard pass.
That was until two weekends ago. I was at my boyfriend’s house, and he was playing some kind of playlist/radio thing from Amazon. I was bobbing my head and complimenting him on his playlist.
He, too had no idea who was playing, because songs were selected randomly for the vibe he had set or however Amazon music works. When we checked, it was “Spillways” by Ghost!
I had been bamboozled!!! Then another Ghost song came on: “Griftwood.” Then another: “He Is.”
So I went home and blasted IMPERA the entire drive. And then I had it on loop. And then I had 7 songs on loop….then I had “Mary on a Cross” on loop for probably a day straight! It was truly an illness.
All that being said, I can’t say I’m a fan of entire albums of theirs other than IMPERA. So….I’m not a full Ghosty-Goo or whatever Ghost fans are called.
