OCTOBER: Tearcore
First heavy metal music top 3 from the month of October including honorable mentions and albums I'm anticipating for November.
Firstly, if you’re reading this in email format…what’re you doin’ kiddo?? Read it on the app:
I know you’re hear to get the down and dirty list of my top picks from October, so let’s not waste time and get into it, as I’m sure the picks really won’t be much of a surprise to anyone:
POLYPHIA - Remember that You Will Die
A new guitar god has presented himself in the form of a heavily tattooed living anime character named Tim Hensen. Even Steve Vai knows it. Polyphia had their viral moment on YouTube with the provoking title: Playing God. This kid sold his soul to play guitar better than God can, there is no doubt about that. They’re jazzy, they’re metal, they’re djenty, they’re even poppy. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but everyone knows tea is good for you. So go to your pantry and revisit that box of tea you bought a year ago and make yourself a cup.
Fave song:
FIT FOR A KING - The Hell We Create
Yes, even good Christians see the horror God’s creation has done to one another and have somehow managed to sonically manifest that horror into a damn solid album. From the breakdowns to the bleghs to the mushy melodies that would make any core kid swoon behind their flippy bangs. It’s definitely a nice revamp and modernized album for metalcore.
Fave song:
LORNA SHORE - Pain Remains
Duh. Tears and stank face ALL over the internet. I’m not gonna sit here and tell you how absolutely unnecessarily unreal this album is, because if you’re reading this, you’ve probably NOT been living under a rock lately. If you haven’t come across YouTube thumbnails to at least 3 reaction videos from any of their singles from this album…idk what to tell you. This album is going to be one for the history books. I have never been more in love with an album in such a long time.
Fave song:
There were lots of bangers this month! I’d like to also honorably mention CABAL’s Magno Interitus. Grindy and doomy and blackened, this young band from Denmark has been making noise in all of Earth’s dark crevices.
And of course, I can’t NOT mention the INCREDIBLE music video that Coffin Feeder put together for their song “A Good Supply of Body Bags.” It’s an homage to 80s style arcade games, RoboCop, the Terminator, and just other awesome nostalgic goodies!
Now in anticipation for November (although we’re already a week in), keep your earholes open for new tunes from:
INGESTED - Ashes Lie Still
BRAND OF SACRIFICE - Exodus (single)
CHELSEA GRIN - Suffer In Hell
DEVIN TOWNSEND - Lightwork
BLACK DAHLIA MURDER - Yule 'Em All: A Holiday Variety Extravaganza
SPIRITWORLD - Deathwestern
VOIVOD - Ultraman EP
I’d love it if you tell me what tunes you liked in October, and what you’re excited for in November down in the comments below. You could even tell me I’ve got awful taste in music because it’s way too mainstream, or tell me your life story. Engagement is awesome for growing on SubStack, I think, so anything helps!
